NMSU Track and Field Earns All-Academic Honors

NMSU Track and Field Earns All-Academic Honors

Friday, August 12, 2011 - 2:26pm

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recently announced All-Academic teams and individual honorees for the 2011 season. The New Mexico State track and field squad attained team recognition and three athletes earned individual honors.

The Aggies joined 163 other Division I teams that earned the award as a result of a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or better. Additionally, javelin thrower Kelsey Brennan as well as distance runners Camille Schultz and Courtney Schultz represented NM State on the women's 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team. A record total of 663 student-athletes representing 172 institutions compose the group.
"This is a significant award for the track and field team," said NM State assistant coach Paul Harkins. "The awards show that our athletes are dedicated and work hard both on and off the track."

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

Last May, Brennan and the Schultz sisters competed in the NCAA Outdoor West Preliminary Round at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Brennan placed No. 36 in the javelin with a throw of 41.17m (135-01). Courtney and Camille Schultz competed in the 10,000m run placing No. 36 and No. 37 with times of 35:21.41 and 35:24.46 respectively.

The USTFCCCA academic awards are the first for the Aggies from the organization since Ingrid Flores and Jordan Veney earned individual honors in 2008.

The NM State cross country teams open the 2011 season Sept. 3 at the University of New Mexico's Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque.
