NMSU Split Doubleheader with Wake Forest
The New Mexico State baseball team goes to 2-1 on the year after splitting a doubleheader with Wake Forest (1-2), losing game one 8-5 and winning game two 3-1 at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, Feb. 18.
The Aggies posted their five runs in game one on 10 hits but committed three costly errors, while the Deacons scored eight runs on 13 hits. The Aggies used five different pitchers in the game one with red-shirt junior Casey Collins being credited with the loss after working four and two-third innings and giving up four runs. He also struck out four batters and allowed four walks and seven hits.
The second game of the doubleheader was a bit different as the Aggies followed the lead of pitchers Adam Mott and Tim Torsney. Mott earned his first win in an Aggie uniform going six complete innings and striking out nine of the 24 batters he faced. He allowed only one run and gave up one walk. Torsney earned the save after throwing three innings and not allowing a run on three hits.
"They (Wake Forest) aren't a bad team and hit the ball well today. They were errorless and we committed some errors today and we have to clean that up," head coach Rocky Ward said. "Overall on the day we did pretty well and we feel really good about tomorrow."
NM State fell behind 4-0 after the Deacons scored a run in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings, but cut the lead to one when three runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh. The three, four and five hitters (Parker Hipp, Zac Fisher and Bryan Karraker) were all able to tally an RBI on walks as the bases were loaded when they came to the dish.
The Aggies couldn't take advantage of the opportunity as the Demon Deacons crossed the plate three times in the top of the eighth after the inning got started with an error by the Aggie first baseman. Although NM State scored a run on a solo home run by third baseman Bobby Lecount in the bottom of the eighth, the Deacons were able to post an insurance run in the top of the ninth before winning 8-5.
Game two was scoreless through two and a half innings of play when NM State scored two runs on a double by senior shortstop Zach Voight. Wake Forest made it an interesting game when it posted a in the top of the fifth and had two runners in scoring position before Mott was able to end the inning on his seventh K of the day. The Aggies marked their insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a that brought in Parker Hipp who got on board with a double to left field.
