NMSU Softball Signs Two in Early Signing Period
New Mexico State softball head coach Kathy Rodolph inked two additions to the team for the 2012-13 season; each signing a National Letter of Intent last month to play for the Aggies.
Emma Adams a senior utility from Cibola High School in Albuquerque and Makayla McAdams a senior pitcher from Ironwood Ridge High School in Tucson, Arizona, both signed with the Aggies during the early signing period last month.
Adams is a former high school teammate of current Aggie and 2011 WAC Freshman of the Year, sophomore Valerie Swedberg. The senior has garnered several awards in her three-year career as a Cougar. Adams hit .594 at the plate last season and batted in 33 runs while posting a slugging percentage of 1.000 at Cibola. She was an integral part of Cibola's run in the state tournament last season when the Cougars placed third overall.
As a result of her numbers and accomplishments, Adams was named to the 2011 New Mexico High School Coaches Association Class 5A First team as an outfielder. She also claimed her third straight First Team All District Honor in 1-5A and earned her third consecutive nomination to the Albuquerque Journal All-Metro Team. Adams was named the Outstanding Female of Athlete of the Month in March at Cibola.
"Emma is an in-state student-athlete who we are very excited to coach," said associate head coach Cat Heifner. "She has the potential to be a very good left-handed hitter for us. Adams has already made the sacrifice to play at a high level and her work ethic is special. That experience and hard work should allow her an easy transition into college hitting. We are always happy to sign great in-state talent and we think Emma will excel in our program."
As a sophomore, the lefty posted a .416 batting average and earned All District 1-5A honors while helping Cibola to a third-place showing in Albuquerque Metro. Adams was a freshman on Cibola's 5A State Championship squad that also featured Swedberg. She hit .419 with a slugging percentage of .636 in her first year and earned All District 1-5A honors.
Off the field Adams has earned Academic All-District awards in three consecutive seasons. The aspiring pre-med major is a member of the National Honor Society and the band. She has volunteered working at local softball tournaments and with the New Mexico Sundancers travel ball team.
Adams is the daughter of Dave and Libby Adams of Albuquerque. Her older brother Owen plays collegiate baseball in Oklahoma.
An Aggie legacy athlete, Makayla McAdams is the daughter of former NM State volleyball standout Connie Monks who led Roadrunners in blocks in 1985 and still holds the record for most blocks (16) during a four-set match in program history.
McAdams is an accomplished athlete in her own right in the circle. With a 30-7 record in the circle, McAdams led Ironwood Ridge to the Arizona Class 5A State Championship game last season, as the Nighthawks finished as the state runner-up. The pitcher already holds career records at Ironwood Ridge in wins and strikeouts with her senior season ahead of her. She also holds the Nighthawks' single-season record with the 30 wins she racked up last spring.
As a junior, she was named to the All-State Class 5A First Team and the Tucson Citizen recognized McAdams as an All-Southern Arizona First Team member last season. During the summers, McAdams plays for Tucson's travel ball team the Arizona Desert Thunder. Off the field McAdams volunteers locally in Tucson with Ben's Bells and Buffle Grass Removal.
"We are thrilled to sign a second-generation Aggie," said Heifner. "Makayla's mom competed for the Crimson and White in volleyball, so we are excited Makayla chose NM State as well. She has the potential to be a shut-down pitcher. Makayla has all of the physical attributes and intangibles we look for in a pitcher. Once she adjusts to Division I hitters, she should really excel here. We are very proud she is an Aggie."
McAdams is the daughter of Stephan and Connie McAdams. She also has two younger siblings: Shane and Cassidy.
The pair of new signees will join Coach Rodolph's team next fall to prepare for the 2013 season.
The Aggies open the 2012 season against Indiana on Friday, Feb. 10 as part of the Hotel Encanto Invitational that runs through Feb. 12.
