NMSU Soccer's Win Streak Hits Six With Victory over Ark.-Little Rock
The New Mexico State University soccer team increased the team's winning streak to six games by defeating the University of Arkansas-Little Rock 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The winning streak is the longest in program history since the team first began play in 2009. UALR outshot NM State 13 to 11 through the two periods. NM State ended the game with 10 fouls to eight by UALR.
NM State took advantage of the opportunities it had, scoring two goals in the first half. Freshman Jennae Cambra scored two goals in the game to bring her season total up to three.
Cambra opened the game up early by scoring a goal six minutes into the game. Freshman Katie Smith took the ball down field near the left corner where she kicked across to Cambra. Cambra volleyed the ball into the left side of the goal just inside the goal box.
Cambra struck again as with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. Cambra received a pass from sophomore Daisy Hernandez and maneuvered past two defenders for an open shot. Cambra's shot 15 yards out flew past the goal keeper and into the bottom right corner for a goal.
Physical play in the second half intensified. A yellow card was issued to a player from each side during the second half.
As the game drew to a close, Smith took advantage of a misplayed kick by a defender resulting in a goal. A UALR defender attempted to clear a ball out, but kicked it to Smith who shot from 15 yards out to give NM State its third goal of the game.
The Aggies' next match will be against Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, on Friday, Sept. 16.
