NMSU Soccer Selected to Finish 8th in WAC Preseason Poll

Sports

POSTED: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 - 1:51pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 - 6:31pm

The New Mexico State soccer team was selected to finish eighth in the WAC Preseason Poll, which is voted on by the leagues coaches.

"A lot of it is based on where we finished last year and until we prove otherwise that's the way it is," head coach Blair Quinn said. "This is a great opportunity for a young new program and young coach to prove everyone wrong."

The Aggies open training camp for their third season, Wednesday, Aug. 3, and in their young existence the Crimson and White have recorded one WAC Tournament appearance.

San Jose State and Utah State tied for the conference favorite, while the 2010 WAC Tournament Champion Fresno State was picked third. Idaho followed in fourth, and Louisiana Tech appeared in fifth. Nevada was voted to finish in sixth, while Hawai'i and the Aggies were voted to the seventh and eighth places, respectively.

Idaho junior forward Chelsea Small garnered Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors, while San Jose State senior defender Jessica Ingram was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The Aggies open the 2011 season at UTEP, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
