Tuesday, April 2, 2013 - 2:21pm

The New Mexico State baseball team (16-14) used three home runs to pick up a 10-5 win over Rio Grande Rival New Mexico (13-14), Monday, April 1 at Presley Askew Field.

Junior Tanner Rust got the Aggie bats going with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to give his team its first lead of the game. After the Lobos scored two runs in the top of the second and another in the third, NM State regained the lead in the bottom of the third when senior short stop Parker Hipp and senior Bobby Lecount combined for back-to-back home runs.

Hipp hit a three-run blast over the right field wall and senior Bobby Lecount followed up with a solo-shot to the opposite field marking his team-high seventh homer of the season.

“We swung the bats really well and it was good to see some balls leave Presley Askew,” head coach Rocky Ward said. “We got really good bullpen relief after Collins gutted it out for us. Ryan Beck’s performance was great as well.”

Senior Casey Collins picked up the win as he went 5.0 innings striking out three batters while holding off the Lobos for five runs. Collins is now 3-3 on the season with 25 K’s. The Aggie relievers didn’t allow another Lobo run to score from their on-out. Senior lefty Ryan Beck entered the game with the bases loaded in the seventh and helped the Aggie defense tally three straight outs including one strikeout.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth Rust would blow the game wide open with a three RBI double to leftfield. After today’s game Rust is hitting a team-high .382 on the season with eight doubles and 23 RBIs. NM State finished the eighth with four runs on two hits with Rust eventually crossing the plate on a wild pitch to go up 10-5.

NM State ended the evening drawing eight walks but tallied more strikeouts than Lobos (7-6).
The 953 fans in attendance is the most that have been to an Aggie baseball game in the past seven years of recorded attendance figures, while 705 came out to Presley Askew Field to watch the UNM/NM State rivalry game on April 3, 2012. Aggie fans are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Aggies as they return to WAC action in a three-game series against Dallas Baptist starting, Friday, April 5 at Presley Askew Field. Saturday night’s game will be televised on Aggie Vision. Check your local listings for airtimes.
