NMSU Men's Golf 2nd at WAC Championships
The three-time defending champion New Mexico State men’s golf team trails Fresno State by one stroke after the first round of the 2011 WAC Men’s Golf Championships, at the 7,313-yard, par-72 Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. The Aggies fired a 1-over par, 289 in round one as a team.
“I thought from top to bottom we played very well,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “I think we have put ourselves in a good spot after day one. The team that keeps the ball in play is going to win this tournament and I know that may sound silly but until you see this course you wouldn’t understand. If we can eliminate the big mistakes over the next few rounds we have a good chance.”
Senior Tim Madigan is currently tied for fourth overall after a 1-under par, 71. Madigan carded four birdies on the day. Juniors Gaston De La Torre and Joon Lee both fired an opening round of even-par, 72. Both golfers are tied for sixth overall, as De La Torre recorded three birdies and Lee grabbed four birdies on the day.
Junior Zachery Fullerton and sophomore Justin Shin both carded a 2-over par, 74 in round one and are tied for 14th overall. Shin recorded five birdies while Fullerton had one birdie in the round.
Fresno State leads the tournament after a first round score of even par, 288 followed by NM State (+1), San Jose State (+5), Louisiana Tech (+7) and Idaho (+10).
Idaho's Damian Telles carded the best score of the day with a 6-under par 66 to lead by two strokes. Fresno State had two players in the top three as Bryan Hogan shot a 68 while Brian Sunker had a 70. Also shooting under par with 71's was defending WAC champion Madigan and Mark Hubbard of San Jose State.
The three-day tournament continues on Tuesday with second-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
