New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Wednesday that defensive tackle Walton Taumoepeau has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football for the Aggies beginning in the 2011 season. Taumoepeau, a 6-3, 300 pound defensive lineman played two seasons at Cerritos College in California.

“I really liked Taumoepeau’s size at 6-3, 300 pounds,” Walker said. “He is very explosive off the ball. In our conference you play against teams that can run the ball and have good offensive lineman so we wanted to get a little more depth at our tackle position. I feel that Taumoepeau can come in and compete for a starting spot.”

As a sophomore, Taumoepeau helped his team to a 9-4 overall recorded while tallying 23 tackles on the season, with one sack, two tackles for a loss, five quarterback hurries and a pass break up. Taumoepeau also helped his team to the Southern California Championship game. As a freshman Taumoepeau, posted 22 tackles on the year, with a season-high five stops and two tackles for loss against Ventura College. He also had three tackles against both Mt. San Antonio College and El Camino College.

The Aggies begin spring practice on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 9 a.m. in Aggie Memorial Stadium.
