NMSU Earns Huge Victory over Prairie View A&M
The New Mexico State soccer team concluded the inaugural Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic with a 8-0 win over Prairie View A&M. Sophomore forward Yolanda McMillion led the Aggies with the first hat trick in school history with three goals in the tournament finale.
NM State posted its first shutout of the season in freshman goalkeeper Erin Wosick’s first career start. The eight goals also set a school record for goals in a match. The Aggies out-shot the Panthers, 28-4.
“Anytime you can score goals, it’s good,” head coach Michael Needham said. “Anytime you can dominate a performance, that’s good. We still have to work on that first 30 minutes.”
The Aggies scored first when senior midfielder Nina Yanes found McMillion on a corner kick at the 31-minute mark. Three minutes later, NM State posted a 2-0 advantage when senior midfielder Baili Foutz’ 21-yard free kick ricocheted off a Prairie View A&M defender into the net.
The NM State offense continued the pressure, and McMillion scored her second goal of the half on a pass from sophomore forward Megan Hendler in the 38th minute.
In the second half, Foutz gave the Aggies a 4-0 lead when she scored on a 15-yard strike from sophomore midfielder/forward Lauren Cope in the 55th minute. McMillion then recorded the hat trick with her third score on a corner kick from freshman midfielder Mary Kate Koziol in the 69th minute. McMillion leads the team with five goals this season.
At the 71-minute mark, the Aggies increased their lead to 6-0 when freshman forward Dani De La Vina scored her first career goal. Redshirt sophomore defender Heather Goldberg scored the last two goals in the 82nd and 88th minute on assists from Yanes.
In the first match of the day, North Texas beat Jacksonville State, 2-0. The Aggies return to the field Friday, Sept. 3, in Albuquerque for their first road contest of the year against New Mexico in the Rio Grande Rivalry.
