The New Mexico State University cross country team will face some of the country's top programs this weekend at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Oct. 1.

NM State will be competing with schools from all over the Midwest and Southwest area. The men's squad will be competing with five teams ranked in the top 20, which includes host school Oklahoma State ranked No. 1 overall. The men's team will also race with No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 6 Indiana, No. 13 Northern Arizona and No. 16 Arkansas. On the women's side, Oklahoma State is ranked No. 23.

"I am looking forward to how the men's team stacks up against some of the best teams in the country," said assistant coach Meaghan Harkins.

NM State is entering the event after finishing first overall for both teams in the Kachina Classic back on Saturday, Sept. 17.

NM State previously ran the Cowboy Jamboree in 2009, with the men's team placing 11th and the women's team placing 10th. Courtney Schultz finished first for NM State and 30th overall for the women's team and Ian Ruybalid finished first for the men's team and 59th overall.

Harkins said training for both teams has been at a high level, especially for this event. This will be the first 6K the women's team has participated in all season.

"The men's team has been training and racing at a high level all season," Harkins said. "The women's training has been aimed towards a longer race so we should fare well this weekend."

The men's and women's teams will begin on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 1.
