NMSU Baseball Ready for WAC Tournament
The New Mexico State baseball team heads into the Western Athletic Conference as the No. 2 seed in this week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament after finishing with a 14-9-1 record in league play. The Aggies ended their regular season with a 36-21-1 overall record and open up the tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., Thursday, May 27 at 4:00 p.m. (MT).
The Aggies reached the tournament for the first time in 2008 when they dropped their first two games in Ruston, La. Last year, NM State made it to the championship round of the tournament and this year it looks to win it all and move on the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
The Aggies have a first-round bye in the tournament, which starts Wednesday, May 26 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., and will take on the highest-seeded winner from Wednesday's games. Fresno State, who is the No. 1 seed and the 2010 WAC Regular Season Champion, also has a first round bye and will take on the lower seed of the winners from Wednesday.
About NM State: The Aggies were ranked in the College Baseball Newspaper poll twice this season but struggled in the final weeks of the regular season, winning only one game out of the last 10.
The Aggies are now 36-21-1 overall while they head into the Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed with a 14-9-1 record in league play. NM State hit .351 this season, which is eighth best nationally, while hitting .331 in WAC play.
NM State had two extended winning streaks this season with the first winning streak, which was the longest of the season, began March 20 and lasted 12 games before it ended on April 10 when the Aggies fell to Nevada 17-2 at Presley Askew Field. . During that time NM State took two of three from UC-Santa Barbara, a game from Texas Tech and Nevada, while sweeping Wofford and Houston Baptist. The second winning streak lasted 10 games and went from April 18-May 2. The Aggies picked up 10 conference wins in that time.
The Aggies started the season 0-3 after losing to Washington, Gonzaga and Missouri in the Cactus Classic, which was held in Tucson, Ariz. from Feb. 19-21. NM State is now well above .500 at 36-19-1. The 10-10 tie came Sunday, April 11, in the series finale against Nevada. NM State won 11-consecutive games before jumping into the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (CBN) Top-30 NCAA Division I baseball poll at No. 20, Monday, April 5.
The Aggies took two of three games from UC-Santa Barbara before sweeping Wofford in a four-game series. NM State then went to Texas beating Texas Tech in Midland, Texas, March 30, before sweeping Houston Baptist in Houston. Other than losing the three games in the season opening tournament the Aggies have only lost one series in 2010, falling to offensive powerhouse Georgia State 2-1, which included a loss where NM State scored 24 runs.
The Aggies have posted a nation-leading 565 RBI and have already blasted 103 home runs, which is third nationwide. The Aggies have tallied at least 100 home runs in a season four times under head coach Rocky Ward.
