NMSU Baseball opens season with win vs Wake Forest

UPDATED: Friday, February 17, 2012 - 11:41pm

The New Mexico State baseball team (1-0) opened the 2012 season with a 5-3 victory over Wake Forest (0-1) at Presley Askew Field, Friday, Feb. 17.

The Aggies won the game behind the arm of starting right-handed pitcher Ryan Beck as he went 5 2/3 innings marking seven strikeouts and walking only two batters. He allowed one run and three hits while facing 23 batters. After allowing a single in the top of the first, Beck and the Aggies retired 13 consecutive batters before a Deacon hit a single in the sixth.

"Beck was just outstanding and their guy was really good but Beck hung in there and picked up the win," head coach Rocky Ward said. "Guys battled all day and we played really good defense. Bryan Karraker was just fabulous with three plus-plays, not just ordinary plays but plus plays in the outfield. It is good to start the season with a win."

The Aggies were the first to score as preseason WAC Player of the Year catcher Zac Fisher bolted a liner over the right-field wall in the bottom of the fourth. With an out in the bottom of the fifth, designated hitter Cody Edwards got on with a walk after being down no balls and two strikes. Edwards moved over to second base after the Demon pitcher balk before senior left fielder Tanner Waite picked up his first RBI of the season.

Relief pitcher Robert Roher jumped on the mound with two outs in the sixth inning and earned four strikeouts in one and one-third innings of work. Tyler Mack came in for the seventh and picked up three K's before closer Scott Coffman ended the game in the ninth.

"Roher comes in and gets us out of the inning and gives us another and that was big for us," Ward said. "Coffman came in and it wasn't a save situation and he might have struggled a bit because of that but he did his job."

NM State posted three runs in the ninth after second baseman Parker Hipp led the inning off with a walk before Kurt Snowley brought him in with an RBI single.

The Aggies return to action, Saturday, Feb. 18 with a doubleheader starting at 2pm (MT). Live stats will be available online at www.NMStateSports.com and game two of the doubleheader will broadcast over the radio waves in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570.
