Friday, March 16, 2012 - 9:13pm

The New Mexico State baseball team goes to 13-8 on the year after defeating Southeast Missouri State 9-1 at Presley Askew Field, Friday, March 16.

Starting pitcher Ryan Beck was masterful against SEMO earning his third win of the year after seven innings of work without allowing any runs to cross the plate. Beck's ERA fall to 2.00 after the evening and has a team-high 41 strikeouts after posting nine against the Redhawks.

"Ryan was outstanding and we took advantage of their starter when he walked a few batters in the second inning," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We felt we had a good chance to win with Beck on the mound and the guys followed thru today."

The Aggies scored a run in the top of the first after the SEMO centerfielder scored an error and posted another five runs in the bottom of the second when the Redhawks starter allowed four walks and four singles. The walks that Kyle Phillips and Bobby Lecount tallied also earned them RBIs in the books.

NM State scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 8-0 lead before senior closer Scott Coffman allowed a home run in the top of the fifth. Coffman bounced back and retired the next three batters with three swinging strikeouts. NM State tallied 13 K's on the day compared to SEMO coming up with only four on the day.

The Aggies battle SEMO in a doubleheader, Saturday, March 17 at Presley Askew Field starting at 3pm. The first game starts is scheduled to air over the radio waves on KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play.
