NMSU Associate A.D. named Senior Associate A.D. at Memphis
New Mexico State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston announced Thursday afternoon that Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Maria Roth has accepted the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Services and the Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Memphis, joining the Tigers’ staff on May 1st.
“We are happy and excited for Maria (Roth) as she gets a chance to grow professionally in college athletics,” Boston said. “I know her long term goal is to be an athletic director, and I think this position takes her one step closer to achieving that goal. She has been an outstanding administrator at NM State and has been very effective in her role as senior woman administrator. Maria will be missed, but at the same time we are very happy for her.”
“Going to an institution (Memphis) that is BCS conference bound will provided me with new challenges and experiences that will further develop and advance me in my career in athletics administration,” Roth said. “I will be forever grateful for the wonderful opportunities New Mexico State University has afforded me from an outstanding collegiate athletic experience, a fantastic education, to a fulfilling and dynamic career in athletics administration.”
Roth has spent the past 15 years as a member of the athletics department at New Mexico State.
At Memphis, she will oversee and provide leadership for compliance, several sports, the Tigers’ weight rooms, sports medicine and the Life Skills program. She will also serve as the program’s liaison to the Center for Athletic Academic Services.
A former Aggie volleyball player who ranks among the career leaders in five categories at New Mexico State, Roth began her collegiate career as an assistant volleyball coach for five seasons from 1997-2002. She helped guide the Aggies to a 2001 Sun Belt Western Division championship and served as the outside hitters coach.
She moved into athletics administration in July 2002, becoming an Assistant Athletic Director and the department’s Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). She was elevated to an Associate Athletic Director position in August of 2009.
As both an assistant and associate athletic director, she served as the sport administrator for nine sports, including women’s basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. She helped in the department’s creation of a 10-year Gender Equity Plan and assisted New Mexico State in the addition of women’s soccer and women’s equestrian as varsity sports. She was instrumental in bringing the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to Las Cruces for back-to-back seasons, serving as the tournament director. Roth also served as the event manager for all women’s revenue-generating contests and assisted in fundraising and friend-raising activities locally and regionally. She was also involved in State of New Mexico legislature lobbying efforts and contributed to the athletic department’s strategic plan announced in 2005.
A member of the NCAA Division I softball committee from 2008-2012, Roth is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Roth graduated from New Mexico State in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. As a member of the Aggie volleyball program, she was named to the All-Big West Conference team in 1994 and 1995 and was selected to the AVCA first team all-region in 1995.
