NM State Women’s Golf to Play Against Elite Teams
The New Mexico State women's golf team returns to the Los Angeles area next week, Mar. 4-5, to participate in the 2013 Bruin-Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine.
The three-round tournament will be played at the par 72, 6,131-yards El Caballero Country Club located in Tarzana, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles. The first two rounds (36 holes) will be played on Monday, Mar. 4, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (MT). The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday, Mar. 5, with players teeing off at 8:30 a.m. (MT).
This will be by far the toughest test of the season for the Aggie squad as the 15-team field is loaded with some of the top teams in the country, including the no. 1 ranked team in the nation according to golfstat.com rankings, the USC Trojans, and Arizona, who sits at no. 8.
USC finished second during the 2012 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, one stroke behind eventual champion Alabama. UCLA finished eighth during the championships while Pepperdine finished 21st. The host teams currently are ranked 20th and 33rd, respectively.
In all, the field includes seven teams ranked in the top 50 by golfstat.com. The field also includes fellow Western Athletic Conference member Denver, who is ranked 31st, and in-state rival New Mexico.
The complete list of teams participating alongside NM State includes: UCLA, Pepperdine, USC, Arizona, BYU, Denver, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, San Diego State, UNLV and Washington State.
The Aggies will be represented by the five-golfer team of freshmen Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias, sophomores Laura Barron and Paige Darwin and junior Amelie Buhl. Dalpes, Barron and Buhl have participated in all six tournaments thus far this season for NM State. Darwin, meanwhile, will be making her third appearance, and first of the spring schedule, for the Aggies. Macias, who joined the team this semester, will be playing in her second consecutive tournament.
NM State returns to the Los Angeles area two weeks after participating in the Folino Invitational where they finished in 10th place. Dalpes, who continues to lead the Aggies in all major categories, was the top finisher for NM State, finishing in a tie for 14th. Buhl, meanwhile, finished in a tie for 35th, her best finish of the season.
This is the fourth installment of the Bruin-Wave Invite. The Aggies have also competed in the three previous tournaments. During last year's tournament, NM State ended up with a 12th place finish and was led by former Aggie golfer Demi Mak who finished in a tie for 11th place. Barron and Buhl also competed in last year's tournament, finishing in a tie for 69th and 78th, respectively. The Aggies best finish at the Bruin-Wave Invite came during the 2011 edition of the tournament where they finished in 10th place.
All three previous tournaments have been won by a Los Angeles-based university. USC took home the inaugural tournament trophy in 2010 while the two host teams have split the crown the last two years with UCLA winning in 2011 and Pepperdine taking home last year's team trophy.
