Some members of the New Mexico State University men’s basketball team gave back to the Las Cruces community this past September as they served food, washed dishes and met with residents at El Caldito Soup Kitchen located on West Amador in Las Cruces.

Team members including sophomore center Sim Bhullar and junior guard K.C. Ross-Miller went to the soup kitchen and helped the community-based organization prepare and serve a midday meal.

“Serving was fun and it was a great experience,” Ross-Miller said. “It was great to give back to people in need.”

El Caldito is a community based-volunteer organization with three part-time employees and uses dedicatied volunteers to perform all the tasks necessary in a kitchen to process and store food, prepare and serve meals and clean up afterwards.

Bhullar used his extended reach to help prepare sandwiches for the needy, while Ross-Miller used his quick hands to prepare chicken for the hungry visitors. Video coordinator Josh Daeche also got in on the fun as he jumped all over the dishwashing duties.

“Coach [Marvin] Menzies is a strong advocate of giving back to the community and he has given me the opportunity to help lead the staff and team to give back,” Daeche said. “The guys have done such a great job and have represented the team and the university in such a great light.”

The team has also helped with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Volleyball Tournament, the Relay for Life, the Child Abuse Prevention 5K, Disabilities Coalition and also attended different Las Cruces Public Schools to talk about what it means to be active, to stay fit and to learn and pay attention in school.

Other members of the NM State men’s basketball team are scheduled to help at the soup kitchen the fourth weekend of various months. The team is also hoping to get out to the kitchen on Thanksgiving.
