This week in New Mexico State athletics
Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State men’s golf team hosts the 2013 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Oct. 21-22 at the 7,074-yard, par-71 NM State Golf Course. This is the 14th year of the Herb Wimberly as the Aggies have won this event three times since 1996. The tournament will feature a strong group of collegiate teams including, Kansas, Wichita State, UTEP, UTSA, Nebraska, Texas State, Northern Colorado, UT Arlington, San Houston State, Colorado State, Air Force, UMKC, Nevada, Arizona, UC Riverside and Oral Roberts. Golfers will play 36 holes on Monday with a shot gun start at 8:00 a.m. (MT), followed by 18 holes on Tuesday with an 8:00 a.m. shot gun start.
The New Mexico State Aggies (0-7) welcome the Abilene Christian Wildcats (5-3) to Aggie Memorial Stadium, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. You can listen to all the action with the ‘Voice of the Aggies’ Jack Nixon and color analyst Preston Williams beginning at 5 p.m. on KGRT 104 FM. Also catch the action in Spanish with Bob Sherman and Sal Betancourt on Vista 98.7 FM. AggieVision will produce and distribute the game. The game will be televised live on Comcast New Mexico, FS-Arizona Plus, KASY (Albuquerque), CW (El Paso) and Altitude 2. The Aggies have a history of playing FCS programs. In fact, the Aggies are 41-25-1 all-time against Championship Subdivision programs. The last FCS school NM State played was Sacramento State, on Aug. 30, 2012, winning 49-19 in Las Cruces. The Aggies last lost to a Championship Subdivision team in overtime in 1997 at home against Cal Poly, 38-35. Northern Arizona is the FCS program that NM State has faced the most. The Aggies hold a 17-7-1 record over the Lumberjacks with the first game played in 1930 and the last in the series in 1982.
Swimming & Diving
The New Mexico State University swimming and diving team kicks off its dual meet season on Friday, Oct. 25, by taking a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete against the Air Force Academy. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (MT).
The Aggies return home to the NM State Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 25 to take on Seattle U for the second time this season. The Aggies then host Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 27.
The New Mexico State volleyball team hosts two Western Athletic Conference matches in the Pan American Center this week. The Aggies face Grand Canyon, Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. with that match televised as a part of the AggieVision Productions. Please check local listings for show times in your area. NM State takes on Texas-Pan American in the second match of the week, Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. The match against the Broncs will air over the radio waves on KSNM AM 570.
