New Mexico State sophomore Strahinja Trecakov was tabbed the men’s tennis Athlete of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference for the week of Feb. 10-16, the conference office announced Tuesday. The honor is the first for Trecakov and first for the Aggies this season.

Trecakov, a sophomore from Kinkinda, Serbia, helped the Aggies pick up two wins against WAC schools over the weekend. He went undefeated in three doubles matches with partner Germain Degardin at the No. 3 spot. In singles, Trecakov went 2-1 at the No. 1 spot, with wins over Idaho’s Odon Barta (6-3, 6-4) and Kansas City’s Mike Psarros (6-3, 0-6, 6-3). With Trecakov’s help, NM State improved to 2-0 in league play and 6-3 on the season.

The NM State tennis team faces Abilene Christian Feb. 22 and then Arizona the following day, Feb. 23. The Abilene Christian Wildcats are 4-5 on the season, coming into the match against the Aggies with a loss to Southern Methodists University Feb. 8, with a score of 0-7. The Arizona Wildcats (8-6) come to Las Cruces having lost to Nevada, Feb. 16, by a score of 5-2. The Abilene match starts at 11 a.m., while Arizona takes the court the following day at 12 p.m.
