The New Mexico State soccer team tied 2-2 with Utah Valley on Sunday, Oct. 13, after a double-overtime battle. NM State moves to 4-9-2 this season and collects its first tie in Western Athletic Conference play for a 1-5-1 record.

The teams went into halftime with UVU leading 2-0. The Wolverines scores both its first-half goals within three and a half minutes of each other. The first UVU goal came from Kali Stubbs when she booted it in from six yards out.

Stubbs scored the next goal in the 33rd minute of the game. It was a shot from about four yards out by Stubbs that came off a cross from Haley Curtis after a saved header.

“I really think the first half was kind of a hangover affect, for lack of a better word, from Friday night and just how hard and how many minutes we had to play,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “We gave up a couple sloppy goals at the end of the half, but we talked to the team at halftime and told them that to get back in the game, it wasn’t going to be about physicality, it was going to be about mentality.”

The Aggies came back to tie the game in the second half and force overtime play. Junior Jennae Cambra scored from 10 yards out off a long pass from fellow junior Layla Todd in the 53rd minute.

“Individually, Jannae Cambra was on fire this weekend. She had an awesome weekend,” Quinn said.

Cambra scored her fourth goal of the season just minutes later with a header into the goal off a cross from junior Katie Smith.

“We were just all over them in the second half; I really think we were the better team. They were very good and have some dangerous players, so it should be a very exciting game when they come to Las Cruces in a couple weeks.”

The two overtime periods remained scoreless, with the Aggies outshooting the Wolverines 5-2 in the extra periods.

NM State (4-9-2, 1-5-1 WAC) continues on the road with a trip to Grand Canyon on Friday, Oct. 18.
