In the second meeting of the weekend against Kansas City, the New Mexico State soccer team earned its first WAC win of the season with a 2-1 victory. Senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez scored the game-winning goal in the closing minutes of regulation to secure the win for the Aggies (4-5-1, 1-1-0 WAC).

With the scored knotted at 1-1 in the final minutes of the match, Kansas City (4-5-1, 1-1-0) was issued a yellow card in the box. Hernandez converted the penalty kick in the 87th minute for a 2-1 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Hernandez and her first career penalty-kick attempt.

Both offenses attacked the net throughout the contest, but the Aggies out-shot the Kangaroos, 14-10. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter collected three saves in the win.

“We’re not getting to the box enough, and it’s something we have been stressing and stressing ad nauseam,” head coach Blair Quinn said.

Kansas City struck first in the 13th minute with the first goal of the game on a free kick to take a 1-0 lead.

The Aggies answered to tie the match at 1-1, when junior midfielder Katie Smith scored her first goal of the season on a rebound on a corner kick from sophomore forward Samantha Sandoval in the 25th minute.

In the second half, NM State was fouled in the box and drew its first penalty kick of the season in 60th minute but the attempted sailed high.

“We asked our girls to be more physical,” he said. “They manhandled us, quite frankly, on Friday night in Kansas City. They were just tougher than we were, and we had to change that when we came back home. I’m proud of the way we responded.”

The Aggies return to the road next weekend with games at Idaho, Sept. 27 and Seattle U, Sept. 29.
