The NM State men’s golf team looks to add to its WAC Championship trophies as they head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships from May 2-4, at the par 72, 7,066-yard Stallion Mountain Golf Club.

“We drew the first tee time, which is 6:30 a.m. on Friday,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “It is very important that we get off to a fast start. All year long we have not played well in the early morning rounds so we will get up a little earlier and be ready to go when it is time for us to tee off. This is a great tee time to have because we can get out and play before the winds start up.”

Junior Brett Walker, sophomore Kenneth Fadke II, junior Pat Beyhan, senior Willy Hogan and senior Zach Adams will represent the Aggies at this year’s championship.

“The players are excited,” Dirks said. “Our team has been playing well at home in practice and are ready to go out and defend our title from last season and bring home the 2014 WAC Championship to Las Cruces.”

The Aggies have won six WAC Golf Championships in eight years. Last year NM State shot a three round score of 23-over par, 887, winning by six strokes.

Former Aggie Justin Shin was named a first team all-WAC selection last year, while Fadke earned second team honors. Dirks was named WAC Coach of the Year, marking his sixth conference coach of the year honor in his career.

Fadke finished second overall with a three-round score of 4-over par, 220 (71-74-75). Fadke recorded four birdies in the final round, carding a 4-over par, 75.
