NMSU football takes Ice Bucket Challenge

The New Mexico State football team participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) after practice on Monday, Aug. 18.

Brian Lainhart, who is a former player of NM State head coach Doug Martin at Kent State, invited his old coach to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Martin responded by challenging the entire NM State football team to participate in the challenge.

Center Valerian Ume-Ezeoke and linebacker Rodney Butler had buckets of ice water dumped on them to represent NM State and challenged all the football teams in the Sun Belt Conference to help support the cause.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raises awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease, which is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor system and ultimately alters the connection between voluntary movements and the brain.

So far, the challenge has gained worldwide awareness and has raised $15.6 million dollars in response.

Within 24 hours of being challenged, the participant must record a video accepting the challenge then pouring a bucket of ice water on themselves.

The challenge has gone viral on social media sites with celebrities, political figures and athletes posting videos of themselves and calling others to participate.

The Aggies open the season against Cal-Poly University on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. (MT) and have faced the Mustangs on three occasions prior to this upcoming meeting.

Tickets to the game start at $10, while youth tickets for kids 12 and under are just $5 and include a free hot dog and soda from Sodexo Dining Services. Single game tickets go on sale Aug. 21 at the Pan American Center ticket office and will also be sold on the day of the game. Season tickets are available now starting at $50, which includes six home games.
