NMSU finishes up a solid weekend at Springtime Invitational
Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State track and field team finished its competition at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, April 12.
The Aggies had several successful performances by their athletes including sweeping the top three spots in the 1500-meter run.
“It was a good performance from a lot of our athletes today,” head coach Orin Richburg said. “A couple of our kids did well today like Diana (Hawk) who won the 1500. Jenna (Banegas) ran well today and Akuadasou (Ezenyilimba) did well in the hammer throw. We’re still trying to improve and get consitency with our team and we’re going to be ready for the next few meets before the conference championship.”
In the 1500-meter run, the Aggies took the top three spots led by junior Diana Hawk who finished first overall with a time of 4:40.63. This marks the fourth consecutive meet that Hawk has won the 1500-meter run. She was followed by junior Megan McNally, who finished second with a time of 4:56.22, and senior Sarabel Bojorquez in third with a time of 5:01.35.
Senior Gael Sanchez also competed in the 1500-meter run where she finished fifth with a time of 5:06.33. Junior Katie Strong and senior Christiana Barela finished seventh and eighth respectively.
Junior Jenna Banegas competed in the 100-and-200-meter dash. In the 100-meter, Banegas finished sixth with a time of 12.00. She finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.43.
Senior Alishia Perkins also competed in the 100-meter dash where she finished fifth with a time of 11.92. In the 200-meter dash, Perkins finished 13th with a time of 25.04.
In the 800-meter run, the Aggies were led by sophomore Latrice Brooks who finished third with a time of 2:17.35. She was followed by freshman Shaniece Prevot in fourth with a time of 2:20.78.
Also in the 800-meter run, sophomore Ashley Hall finished sixth with a time of 2:22.56, senior Kayla Nagunst finished in seventh place with a time of 2:24.47, senior Samantha Thompson earned an eighth-place finished with a time of 2:26.40 and sophomore Leah Englehart finished ninth with a time of 2:29.38.
Junior Taylor Black finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 3.60m (11’9.75”). Sophomore Marissa Gonzales, sophomore Dustee Eldridge and freshman Gabriela Rodriguez also competed in the pole vault for the Aggies.
Freshman Akuadasou Ezenyilimba competed in the hammer throw, the discus and the shot put. In the hammer throw, she finished third with a distance of 48.36m (158’8”). In the shot put, Ezenyilimba finished seventh and in the discus she finished eighth.
In the javelin, NM State was led by junior Tiffany Gerber, who finished second with a distance of 41.37m (135’8”). Junior Nicolette Serrao earned a third-place finish with a distance of 40.58m (133’1”).
The Aggies will return to Texas for their next competition when they competed in the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on April 19.
