NMSU baseball connection to world champs

New Mexico State
Friday, November 1, 2013 - 4:17pm

Did you know that there is a connection between the 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox and the New Mexico State University baseball staff?

John Farrell, Manager of the World Champion team played under former Aggie athlete and NM State baseball assistant coach, Gary Ward at Oklahoma State University.

Gary Ward coached at OSU from 1978 to 1996 and after coached at New Mexico State University from 2001 to 2002. As head coach for OSU, Ward led the team to 16 straight conference titles, 17 NCAA Regional appearances and 10 trips to the College World Series in 19 seasons. He coached 15 first-team All-Americans and a total of 58 (first, second and third teams) during his complete head-coaching career.

“When I go back to Gary Ward, he was so goal-oriented, and the process to achieve the goal, that still influences me today” Farrell said in an interview with Oklahoma News.

As an athlete, Ward completed in both Basketball and baseball at NM State from 1960-1962 and led the team in win-loss record as a pitcher and ERA. He was inducted into the New Mexico State University’s Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as an athlete.

Among players coached by Ward were Robin Ventura, 1988 Golden Spikes Award winner and Baseball America’s Player of the Decade for the 1980’s, and Pete Incaviglia, the NCAA’s career home run leader and Baseball America;s Player of the Century. He also helped to develop Bryan Marquez as one of the best hitting shortstops in the nation as he was named to six different All-American teams in 2009.

Ward’s accomplishments as an athlete and coach remind every student, past and present, to be proud to be an Aggie.
