The New Mexico State men’s golf team is set to open its 2014 spring season Jan. 27-28 at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. The tournament will take place at the par-72, 7,282-yard Sewailo Golf Club.

The tournament format will include 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday.

Freshman Travis Benson, junior Pat Beyhan, sophomore Kenneth Fadke II, junior Brett Walker and senior Zach Adams will represent NM State in the first tournament of the spring.

“To start the spring off I want to see us go out and play solid golf and make good decisions on the course,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “Obviously we want to record good scores but with the long break we could be rusty, so that’s why making good decisions will be key for us. As always our goal is to be in the last group on the last day of the tournament with a chance to win.”

The Aggies finished the 2013 fall season on a hot streak with team victories at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces and the Price’s Give Em’ Five in El Paso, Texas. Currently the Aggies rank No. 65 in the GolfWeek.com standings.

NM State will face some tough teams including: Arizona, Arkansas-Little Rock, BYU, Cal State Fullerton, California, George Washington, James Madison, Loyola Marymount, New Mexico, Oregon State, Pacific, UC Riverside and UTEP.

Last season, the Aggies finished 10th overall at 34-over par. Kenneth Fadke carded a final round score of 3-under par, 68, to lead the Aggies. He finished tied for 21st overall with a three-round score of 4-over par, 217.
