NM State Baseball hosts Oakland
Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State baseball team hosts a four-game series against Oakland, Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2 at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces. The Aggies enter the weekend at 6-2, winning their first two series of the season. NM State currently leads the WAC in the overall standing, while Oakland comes to Las Cruces, holding a 1-3 overall record.
Game one on Friday starts at 6:05 p.m. (MT) while a double-header is scheduled for Saturday, March 1 starting at 1:05 p.m. (MT). Friday’s game and game one of the double-header on Saturday is scheduled to air over the radio waves in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play. Sunday’s series finale starts at 1:05 p.m. (MT) and will be on TV as a part of the AggieVision Productions. Fans should check with their local cable or satellite company for air times. NM State-Oakland, the Series
NM State and Oakland faced each other one other time in program history in a four-game series back in 2002, in Las Cruces. A year in which, the Aggies won the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Aggies lead the series 4-0. In the series, the Aggies averaged over 16 runs a game, including two games with 20-plus runs. In the final two games of the series (both seven inning games) the Aggies put on an impressive offensive display. NM State beat Oakland 21-8 and 27-4 in those two games, recording 48 runs on 71 hits during those 14 innings with only two of the 48 runs being unearned.
Oakland comes to Las Cruces this weekend with a 1-3 overall record after opening up the 2014 against Oklahoma State a week ago. As a team, the Golden Grizzles are batting .262 at the plate, while holding a .326 slugging percentage. Robby Enslen leads Oakland at the plate with a .467 batting average, a .667 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage all of which rank second in the Horizon League. Pitcher Jason Hager leads the lead and the league in ERA with a 1.50. Pitcher Jake Paulson leads the team with eight strikeouts.
First Baseman Koerper Leads Aggies at the Plate
Kristoffer Koerper has jumped on pitches early this season and leads the Aggies in several hitting categories. He is batting .467, has 14 hits, 14 RBI and a slugging percentage of .800, all categories that he leads the team in. He currently leads the WAC in hits, slugging percentage and RBI. Koerper has hit four doubles on the early season and leads the team in thatcategory and has also hit two homeruns. Over the last series, Koerper hit .471 with eight hits and two homeruns. He had a slugging percentage of .882 and collected six RBI.
Medina just Walking Along
Michael Medina has picked up right where he left off last season by drawing a team-leading 12 walks so far. He also leads the WAC in this category with the next closest player to him at eight walks. Medina is leading the team in runs scored with 10 so far this season. He has stolen three bases in three attempts, and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. In the lastseries, Medina hit .455, drew six walks and scored eight runs. He had an on-base percentage of .684, which led the team and stole two bases.
Conard, Kraft and Kilgore Lead Aggie Pitching Staff
The Aggies’ pitching staff has been able to rely on starters Billy Conrad, Robert Kraft and Kyle Kilgore this season. The three pitchers combine for a 3-0 record, 29 innings pitched and have struck out 22 batters. Conard leads the three with a 0.87 ERA, which is good for fifth in the WAC, and has struck out eight batters. Opposing batters are hitting .231 on him and he has yet to give up an extra base hit or a homerun. Kraft has also struck out eight batters on the season and has only surrendered one extra base hit, a double in his first start of the season. Kraft kept his ERA to 1.80 in his start in the last series. He pitched five full innings and struck out two batters. Kilgore has pitched in two games and holds a 1-0 record. He has pitched nine innings and struck out six batters while allowing hitters a .290 batting average.
Barr 2-0 in Relief
Riley Barr leads the team with two wins on the season and currently sits at 2-0 in four appearances. He has pitched three innings and has struck out two batters. He has yet to give up an extra-base hit or a homerun. In the last series, Barr appeared in one game and was credited with the winafter pitching 1.1 innings and striking out two batters.
NM State as a Team
NM State has a 6-2 overall record, with a batting averages at a .277, 71 hits, 64 runs and 59 RBI. The Aggies have 256 at bats, with a total of six home runs and 57 base-hits this season. The Aggies pitching staff totals up a 4.11 ERA (earned run average), 70.0 IP (innings pitched) and 32 ER (earned runs.). The pitching staff has only given up two home runs and two, three-base hits.
Aggies in the WAC
NM State currently leads the WAC in all games played with a 6-2 record. As a team, the Aggies are averaging .277 in batting with 71 hits in their eight games played. They lead the WAC for runs scored (64), on-base percentage (.421), RBI (59), homeruns (6) and stolen bases (13). The Aggies are ahead for per game statistics in runs per game (8.00), homers per game (.75) and RBI per game (7.38). Pitching wise, NM State leads with 62 batters struck out and averaging 7.97 strikeouts per game. Individually, first baseman Kristoffer Koerper leads in most categories in the WAC. He is ahead in doubles (4), total bases (24), hits (14), slugging percentage (.800), homeruns (2) and RBI (14).
