The New Mexico State baseball team fell to Oakland in game one of the four-game series on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, 8-3. The Aggies are now 6-3 on the season, while Oakland improves to 2-3 overall.

The Aggies committed four errors in the game that led to six unearned runs for Oakland. Derek Umphres led the Aggies at the plate with three hits and an RBI. Kristoffer Koerper added one hit and scored two runs. Kyle Kilgore added the other Aggie hit on the night.

Christopher Bradley took the loss for the Aggies and is now 0-1 on the season, after six innings of work, allowing five runs on five hits, while striking out four batters.

The Aggies got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as Koerper started things off with a single to center. Umphres then singled to left field, advancing Koerper to second. Both runners advanced on an unassisted out at first base, followed by another out at first which allowed Koerper to score from third. After two full innings, the Aggies led Oakland, 1-0.

Oakland tied the game at 1-1 after an error by the shortstop allowed the runner to advance to third. A single by the Golden Grizzles next better tied the game. The Aggies then loaded the bases with two outs. Another error by the Aggies allowed Oakland to score two more runs. Oakland would add five runs to the board in the top of the third, taking a 5-1 lead.

Koerper led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, followed by an Umphres double, putting runners at second and third. Koerper would score on a sac fly by Paulson to pull NM State to within three runs at 5-2. After four full innings, Oakland led the Aggies 5-2.

Kilgore led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to center. Koerper would walk to put runners at first and second. Kilgore then scored on a single by Umphres to bring the score to 5-3. The Aggies couldn’t push anymore runs across the plate in the inning.

The Aggies quickly got two outs in the top of the seven. Oakland put runners at second and third. Freeman threw a wild pitch, allowing the runner from third to score. On the same play the throw to the pitcher from the catcher after the wild pitch was over the pitchers head, allowing the runner that had advanced to third to score on the error. After the top of the seventh, Oakland had extended their lead to 7-3.

Oakland added one final run in the top of the eighth to make it 8-3. The Aggies put runners at first and second in the bottom of the inning but couldn’t push runs across the plate. After full eight innings of play, Oakland led the Aggies, 8-3.

Neither team would score in the ninth inning, as Oakland took game one of the series, 8-3.

The Aggies host Oakland Saturday for a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 1:05 p.m. Game two is scheduled for approximately 5:05 p.m. Game one will be broadcast on KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews.
