Home run helps Aggies defeat Northern Colorado
Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State softball team picked up its first win of the weekend at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Aggies defeated Northern Colorado 3-2 on Saturday, March 8 to improve to a 14-10 record this season.
Freshman Susie Chandler went 2-for-3 on the day, which included a solo homerun in the fourth to put the Aggies ahead of the Bears after being tied through the first three innings. Sophomore Fiana Finau also has two hits on the day with a pair of singles.
Sophomore Makayla McAdams started I the circle for the Aggies and pitched the first 3.2 innings before senior Celisha Walker came in to finish the game nd pick up her fourth win of the season. The right-handed hurler pitched two strikeouts and four hits, but did not allow a run to score.
With NM State as the home team, UNC scored the first run off a pair of singles and a walk that loaded the bases with the first three batters of the game. A sacrifice hit scored the first run for the Bears, but the Aggies matched the run in the bottom half of the inning.
A double to the left side by sophomore Emma Adams set up for Finau to get her first hit of the game and bring Adams around the bases to make it a 1-1 game. Junior Lacey Rother followed Finau with a double up the middle, but the pair were left stranded.
NM State sent the Bears away in order in the second, but Northern Colorado scored in the third off a walk and two sacrifice hits to bring the runner around, by the Aggies kept the inning to just four batters.
NM State’s third-inning run came as three Aggies singled to load the bases. A wind pitch scored junior Staci Rodriguez from third. The Aggies let two Bears get hits in the fourth, but left them stranded as Walker came in to close the inning.
Chandler led off the bottom of the fourth with her solo homerun over the left-center field wall. The bomb was her third this season.
While both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth with the Aggies drawing just a walk in the fifth and two singles in the sixth before pulling off the win.
NM State closes out the weekend in Texas with a 9 a.m. game against UT Arlington on Sunday, March 9.
