Aggies Lose 20-6 in Series Finale Against Sacramento State

Aggies Lose 20-6 in Series Finale Against Sacramento State
KTSM
New Mexico State
Sunday, March 30, 2014 - 6:32pm

NM State fell 20-6 in the last game versus Sacramento State on Sunday, March 30. Third baseman Derek Umphres and first baseman Kris Koerper led the team in runs bringing in two each.

The Aggies are now 10-17 on the season and 2-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Hornets improved to 16-11 and stay perfect in WAC play at 6-0. NM State was out hit 17-7 in the game.

Aggie starter Robert Kraft was given the loss moving his record 1-3 after pitching 2.1 innings.

Kraft gave up three runs at the start of the first inning allowing the Hornets to advance to a quick 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Kraft gave up no hits as three batters saw the plate. Offensively, Kris Koerper had a base hit and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Umphres. The first NM State run came after a base hit from junior Kyle Young as Koerper rounded home. An error from the Hornets helped the Aggies land on third and first but a fly hit to left field from Medina ended the inning with the Aggies down 3-1.

In the third inning, a homerun advanced the score to 7-1 and brought in pitcher Trey Gonzales. Sacramento State would go on to score a total of five runs in the inning, moving into the sixth at 8-1.

The Aggies scored another run after Umphres hit his second homerun of the season bringing the score to 9-2. The fourth inning saw two runs for the Aggies with catcher Kevin Carswell scoring off of a base hit from Young. In the fifth, the Aggies scored off of two base hits and an error from Sacramento. Three walked batters gave the possibility for another run with loaded bases as Blackstone entered the box but a fly out to right followed by a hit to third ended the inning with no final run and a 9-6 score.

In the seventh inning, the Hornets scored seven runs to take a 20-6 lead. Unable to answer, NM State lost after a run rule was called.

The Aggies will travel to Albuquerque to take on the University of New Mexico on April 2.
