New Mexico State women’s basketball fell 92-84 to Kansas City on Thursday, Feb. 13, in Kansas City, Mo. NM State drops to 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference and now looks for a comeback against last-place Chicago State on Saturday.

Sophomore Sasha Weber led the Aggies with her fourth 20-point game this season. She scored 22 points and finished with three steals and an assist. NM State also saw help from junior Danesia Williamson and freshman Brianna Freeman with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Williamson had six assists in the game and two steals, while Freeman had three steals and four rebounds.

The Aggies managed to shoot 45.3 percent on the night, but allowed the Roos a 55 percent shooting game. NM State was also outrebounded 49-26 as senior forward Kim Nezianya had 21 boards to go with her 38 points.

NM State got off to a sluggish start with an 11-4 advantage for the Kangaroos through the first five minutes, Weber hit her first three of the game to close the gap to just four points and a jumper by Scott knotted up the game for the first time with 10:18 on the clock.

NM State took the lead 20-19 and ran away with it for the rest of the half. Kansas City tied things up at 26 apiece near the five-minute mark, but the Aggies increased the margin by as many as eight in the final two minutes of the period.

NM State led at the half 40-34 with Weber leading things with 17 points. She was an impressive 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Sophomore Abby Scott had eight points in the opening half with two steals and an assists. It was freshman Tyler Ellis with four rebounds to lead NM State. She also managed six first-half points.

In the second half, Kansas City got within three of the Aggies with five of the first six buckets. The Aggie defense kept the Roos from taking the lead early. Williamson helped NM State early in the half with eight points to keep the team ahead of Kansas City 48-48 with just under 15 minutes to play.

Kansas City took the lead off a jumper, but Ellis got the Aggies back on top with an offensive rebound and the bucket. NM State kept the momentum with eight unanswered points, including a big three by Weber.

With a 66-62 lead, the teams began to trade buckets and the lead for the next several minutes. Kansas City got up by three, but the Aggies came back to tie the game and keep the score within two points unwith the help of Weber and Williamson until the final minutes.

With the 11th tie of the game coming at the 1:40 mark off a jumper by Williamson, Kansas City took away NM State’s chances with the final eight points of the night to pull off the win over NM State 92-84. The Aggies now look to comeback against Chicago State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
