In the first overtime match of the 2013 season, the New Mexico State soccer team fell to against in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, in the 100th minute.

The Aggies are 1-1-0 after the home opening weekend and travel to Las Vegas, Nev., next weekend for the UNLV Nike Invitational.

The Lobos ended the game with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, when they scored on a free kick on the right side from 30-yards away.

The match was a hard fought battle with only 12 combined shots. Senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol and junior midfielder Katie Smith led the Aggies with two shots each.

“We started well on Friday and get our goals, and we had to really, really battle today and play through it, and one mistake costs us,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “We had opportunities. We had five corner kicks and had a couple really good shots. Two goals against us in a weekend is not terrible, but both of them being free kicks in the last minute of a period is something we have to fix.”

The first half was scoreless after 45 minutes of play. Both teams recorded three shots in the first period with Koziol taking two shots. The second half was also a defensive struggle with UNM recording three shots, and the Aggies firing a pair.

“In a game like this, scoring chances are at a premium,” he said. “So every one of those five corners and the five shots we had and the seven shots they had, you have to take your best opportunity, and they did that once.”
