Aggie men's tennis falls at UTSA
Las Cruces, NM — After a week away from the tennis courts, the New Mexico State men’s tennis team was stopped by UTSA 5-2 on Saturday, March 8. The Aggies won the bottom two single matches, but move to 7-5 this season.
The Aggies won the first doubles match of the day at the second court 8-5, but the Roadrunners came back to win at the first and third courts to take the point. Redshirt Paul Denele and sophomore Naveen Manivannan defeated their UTSA opponents 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore Liam Goldberg and senior Marc Westgate took the No. 27 doubles team, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman to a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (7-2) at the No. 1 spot. The Aggie duo also battled at the third court, but was defeated 8-6.
Going into single play, The Aggies were stopped at the first four courts, while junior Patrick Pfister and Manivannan each won their matches at the fifth and sixth courts, respectively. Pfister easily defeated his Roadrunner opponent 6-0, 6-0, while Manivannan won 6-2, 6-4 at the sixth spot.
Junior Germain Degardin battled at the No. 3 spot to a tiebreaking three-set loss. He won the first sets 6-2 and then was defeated 2-6, 5-4 (11-9) to end the match.
NM State continues the weekend against UT Arlington on Sunday, March 9. The match is set for 9 a.m.
