New Mexico St. Defeats Boise St. on Senior Night
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State senior guard Jonathan Gibson scored 24 points to lead the Aggies to a 95-92 victory over Boise State on Saturday.
The Aggies (19-9, 11-3 Western Athletic) led by 20 with 12:18 to play, but Boise State (13-16, 3-11) nearly completed the comeback before an Anthony Thomas 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short.
Boise State junior forward Robert Arnold finished with a game-high 35 points, converting a three-point play that got the Broncos to within five with 1:26 left to play after the Aggies led by 20 with 12:18 to play. Arnold hit a pair of free throws with 49.6 seconds left to close within two after a NMSU turnover on an inbounds pass but it was as close as the Broncos would get.
Boise State was 12 of 29 from 3-point range and out-rebounded the Aggies 44-28, but NMSU got 27 points off 23 Boise State turnovers and shot 52.9 percent from the field.
NMSU extended a five-point halftime advantage to a 20-point lead with a 24-6 run in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Aggies junior guard Gordo Castillo capped a 12-0 Aggies run to put the Aggies up 68-48 with 12:18 left to play.
Five NMSU players finished in double figures with Jahmar Young chipping in with 20 and Hernst Laroche and Hamidu Rahman each scoring 15. The Aggies were 52.9 percent from the field and 10 of 24 from 3-point land.
The Broncos were 6 of 14 from long distance in the first half to keep them within 43-38 at halftime.
