EL PASO — Not so fast – the El Paso Triple-A Name the Team contest is still going strong! While almost 3,000 names have been submitted thus far, there is still time to make sure your name idea is considered for El Paso’s Triple-A team. El Pasoans are encouraged to submit their name ideas by logging on to www.elpasotriplea.com/nametheteam before the entry period closes at midnight on May 24.
“It is very exciting to see that El Pasoans are so engaged with naming their team,” said Alan Ledford, President of MountainStar Sports Group. “While we’ve seen some quality, thoughtful name ideas thus far, we know there are more great ideas yet to be submitted, and hope everyone will take the chance to be part of defining what El Paso’s team will be called and join the running for the exciting grand prize.”
“Plus, we’re hoping El Pasoans will show their community pride and break the record of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Name the Team contest, which had more than 3,000 entries,” added Ledford.
The entry period will conclude at midnight on May 24, and will be followed by voting in early June, where the top-ranked names will be voted on by the public. The winning name will be announced in mid-August. The person who submits the winning name will win an exciting grand prize, to include the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day in the new El Paso Ballpark, two field-level season tickets for the 2014 season, and a personalized jersey.
“The names submitted thus far run the gamut from fun and silly like the Jalapeños, Whiskermen, River Sharks, or the Chucos, to reflective of El Paso’s unique history like the Conquistadors or the Missionaries, to a tribute to the military presence like the Troopers or the Generals, to excitement and aspirations for our community’s future like the Trailblazers or the Phoenix,” added Ledford. “We’re even seeing names in both English and Spanish – that’s not something you see in most communities, but it’s definitely unique and appropriate for El Paso.”
Some contest ground rules: you must be 18 to enter and you can only enter a name once. Kids are encouraged to participate, and can do so with the help of a parent or guardian. Those who do not wish to enter online can also submit their name ideas by sending a standard size postcard with name, address, city, state, and zip code, day and evening phone number, and email address to MountainStar Sports Group LLC, Name the Team Contest, 4401 N. Mesa Street, El Paso, Texas, 79902.
The criteria for selecting a team name include name popularity based on public entries and voting, creativity, how well the name represents El Paso, and family-friendliness. While the public input is an important element of the decision-making process, MountainStar Sports Group will make the ultimate name selection based on the aforementioned criteria and Minor League Baseball approval. In the case that the final name was not submitted by the public, all those who submitted names will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize.
The final team name selected will dictate the team’s colors, mascot, and uniform, all of which will be revealed later this year after the team name is announced in mid-August.
Ticket prices and packages will be announced in the coming months. Those interested in signing up for the Season Ticket Waiting List to be among the first to select their tickets can do so with a no-risk $50 per ticket deposit at www.elpasotriplea.com.
