Murray Awesome, Romo Consistent in Victory over St. Louis

Sports

POSTED: Sunday, October 23, 2011 - 7:15pm

UPDATED: Sunday, October 23, 2011 - 10:50pm

Just what the doctor ordered, an 0-6 St. Louis Rams team limping into Big 'D'.  The Dallas Cowboys smothered the Rams, winning 34-7, and improving to 3-3 on the young season.  The Rams were without starting quarterback Sam Bradford due to injury.

Former Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray ran for a franchise-record 253 yards on 25 carries, including a 91-yard touchdown.

"You always wish to play well, but I never thought in a million years I would have this kind of day."

Murray -- a third-round pick inserted into the starting lineup due to an injury to starter Felix Jones --bested the best single-game performances by NFL rushing king Emmitt Smith and fellow Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett. It's also the ninth highest total in NFL history, and the most rushing yards by anyone in the NFL this season.

"Certainly DeMarco warrants some playing time after today's performance," coach Jason Garrett said.

"The more a runner gets the ball, the better rhythm hopefully he'll get into. We saw a little bit of it at New England, fortunately we saw a lot of it today."

Murray's TD was the second-longest in team history.

Dallas' Tony Romo was 14 of 24 for 166 yards, with two touchdowns.  Romo hit receiver Dez Bryant for four passes and a touchdown in the second half, which was significant because they'd hooked up for only two passes after halftime all season. His other TD throw went to tight end Jason Witten.

Next Sunday, Dallas will play at Philadelphia on Sunday Night Football on NBC Newschannel 9.
