Moonifisant rumbled to a 3-length trial win and set the top qualifying time for the $231,306 New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Friday. The half-brother to 2-time Championship at Sunland Park winner First Moonflash was devastating winning the final 300 yard trial in a time of 15.007 seconds with no wind blowing.

The Sixes Royal gelding is unbeaten in two starts for owners Peter Gallegos, Robert Sanchez and Patricia Gonzalez. The New Mexico-bred two-year-old looks like a horse with a big future under the care of Juan M. Gonzalez. He should be the favorite for the rich finale to be run on Sunday, April 7.

Here is the list of qualifiers: Moonifisant, 15.007; Woodys Allstar, 15.039; Jess Sandy Jr, 15.084; Threedeewoodee, 15.10; Queen But A King, 15.101; Call Me Blazin, 15.176; Too Flash for You, 15.179; Unseen Version, 15.188; Patrick James, 15.254 and Spiced Swissie, 15.261.

Live racing resumes on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday’s featured 10th race is the $85,000 New Mexico State University Handicap at one mile and 70 yards. Lisa Rehburg’s On Down the Road seeks his fourth straight win. He won the Albert Dominguez Handicap last December for trainer Joel Marr.

The $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) is only one week away to be run on Sunday, March 24. An all-Thoroughbred 12-race card worth over $1.4 million including 7 stakes ignites Sunland Park’s biggest day. Top flight horses from around the country will be shipping in for the major stakes races.
