Miners Top Aggies in Cross Country Event

UTEP Junior Risper Kimaiyo won the Kachina Classic for the third straight year, turning in a time of 16:59 in the 5K race. Elkana Rotich won the men’s race with a time of 25:21 in the 8K race at the NMSU Golf Course on Saturday morning.

“I was very proud of our women today,” head coach Paul Ereng said. “We need to continue improving and preparing for the Notre Dame Invitational in two weeks.”

On the women’s side, Kimaiyo claimed her third consecutive title at the Kachina Classic. Karina Garcia was the fifth collegiate runner to cross the finish line at 18:17.

Sophomore Jackline Ekai set a personal best clocking in 10th with a time of 18:41.

The women ran very well and I saw a lot of improvement,” Ereng said. “Jackline Ekai ran today better then she has ever ran and posted a new personal best.”

Gladys Chepsat completed the race with a time of 18:57 to finish 12th overall. Kitria Stewart and Laura Delgado completed the course at 19:04 and 19:55, respectively.

The Women’s 5K was a close race as New Mexico State topped all teams with 33 points while UTEP put up 39 for the silver.

Rotich ran away with the men’s 8K title as the Miners finished the meet with a team score of 39 to place second at the classic. Justice Chirchir took fifth place clocking in at 25:55, followed by Solomon Gardea with a time of 26:01.

Abel Koskey completed the 8K in 26:26 for a 13th place finish. El Paso natives Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia clocked in at 26:38 and 28:35, respectively.

The Miners will travel to South Bend, Ind. on Friday, Sept. 30 for the Notre Dame Adidas Invitational.
