Miners Sweep C-USA Athlete of the Week Honors
Seniors Endurance Abinuwa and Matt Dudley were named the Conference USA Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Abinuwa posted the 19th-fastest time in the nation in the 400m at the 2012 Texas Tech Red Raider Open. The All-American was the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line with a time of 52.85. The senior competed in the 400m for the first time this outdoor season.
Dudley posted a season-best throw in the men’s discus at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open. The El Paso native registered a mark of 53.78m in the discus earning the No. 57 spot in the national rankings. The senior is now ranked first in the C-USA performance list heading into the conference championships.
The duo picks up their first career C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week accolades.
C-USA Track and Field Championships
The Miners will be competing at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 11-13 in New Orleans, La.
The men’s team will be lead by Anthony Wright, who will be representing UTEP in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. The junior holds the No. 1 seed in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.29 registered at the 2012 UTEP Invitational. Wright took gold at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 60m clocking in a time of 6.74.
On the women’s side, Kathya Garcia will be competing in her last conference championships. Garcia returned to the track in March after suffering an injury that sat her out during the cross country and indoor season. The senior posted a season-best of 16:31.69 in the 5,000m taking fourth at Drake Relays. The Mexican native will be running the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m at conference.
Kicking off the competition for the Miners will be Demetris Elia with the men’s hammer throw set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT) on Friday.
