Miners Split Day One of UTEP Invitational
UTEP opened the first day of their tournament dropping one game to UTSA and picking up a victory over Brown to snap their 11 game slide. The Miners (5-11) were unable to overcome an early deficit in a 15-3 five inning loss to the Roadrunners in their first game of the day. UTEP rebounded in game two as they beat Brown in a six inning 10-2 affair.
Colleen Hohman allowed a leadoff single followed by a walk to start the first inning. After another walk Byars singled up the middle to bring in the first two runs of the game. A single by Staton in the following at bat scored Ivy. Joanna Krienitz came in to relieve Hohman after the three run start with only one out. Krienitz got Goff to hit into a double play to end the inning.
UTEP got a run across in the bottom of the inning with Camilla Carrera and Courtney Ware on base Ashley Collazo singled to center field to score Carrera.
UTSA busted the game open with a six-run second inning. The Roadrunners scored their six runs off of six hits and one walk. Krienitz gave up three runs before being replaced by Laura Ramos in the circle. Ramos gave up three runs before she got Garcia to line out to end the inning.
The Miners pushed another run across in the second inning on an RBI off the bat of Chelsea Troupe.
The Roadrunners brought four more batters across the plate in the third inning to extend their lead to 13-2. Hohman came back in to pitch for Ramos in the fourth inning. UTSA furthered their lead in the top of the fifth with two runs.
Tahla Wade picked up an RBI in the bottom of the inning when she drove a single to short to score Troupe who reached on an error.
Hohman (1-7) was stuck with the loss in the game pitching two innings in the game. The Roadrunners scored their 15 runs on 20 base hits. Staton pitched five innings for UTSA scattering six hits and three runs. She struck out eight Miners and only walked one.
The Miners brought the first run across after Troupe reached third base on an error by the right fielder. Tahla Wade knocked a sac-fly to center field to score Troupe and give the Miners an early 1-0 advantage.
Brown took the lead in the top of the second scoring two runs off of Cynthia Villastrigo.
Troupe knotted the game with a homer to right field to lead off the bottom of the third. Wade followed with a single up the middle. After the next two batters didn’t reach base Ashley Collazo singled and was followed by Kayla Oranger who reached on an error that allowed Wade to score as the go ahead run.
Carrera belted a two run jack in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the UTEP lead to 7-2 over the Bears.
Troupe and Carrera reached base again in the sixth inning on walks. Courtney Ware came up to bat after the walk to Carrera and promptly knocked in Troupe on a double to right field to give the Miners an 8-2 lead over the Bears. With Ware on second and Carrera on third Collazo was walked to load the bases. Oranger singled to short to bring in another run. Kayla Black hit the game winning single to short. The run secured the 10-2 six inning run-rule victory for the Miners snapping their 11 game losing streak.
Villastrigo (4-3) picked up her fourth victory in the complete game effort. Villastrgio gave up only one earned run, scattered six hits and walked only one batter.
UTEP will return to the diamond on Saturday for two more games in the UTEP Invitational. The Miners will face Iowa State at 11:30 and Brown at 4:00.
