Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 2:11pm

The Miners head to the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in New Orleans, La.

Tulane serves as host of the C-USA championship meet at the Tad Gormley Stadium from Friday, May 11, to Sunday, May 13.

The men’s team will face some tough competition as they take on Houston. The Cougars were named the 2011 C-USA Outdoor Champions and took silver at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championships.

The men’s hammer opens competition at 2 p.m. (CT) while the heptathlon will be held starting at 3 p.m. The multi-events conclude on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., along with the finals in the long jump, men’s javelin, men’s shot put, men’s high jump and women’s discus throw. Prelims in the running events will begin at 5:30 p.m.

An all session pass for the championships is just $15 for adults and $10 for youth. C-USA students with valid I.D. are admitted free.

The UTEP men are lead by 2012 C-USA Indoor Champion Anthony Wright. The junior took gold in the 60m with a time of 6.74 at the indoor conference championships. Wright earned C-USA Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the 2012 UTEP Invitational, where he posted a time of 10.29 in the men’s 100m. The Germersheim, Germany native will be competing in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

Freshman Anthony Rotich will be competing in his first C-USA outdoor championship. Rotich posted the 34th-fastest time in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational. The Kenyan native is ranked second in the conference performance list with a time of 8:55.63. Rotich will also be running in the 5,000m on Sunday at 8:10 p.m.

On the women’s side, All-American Endurance Abinuwa goes into the championships with the 19th-fastest time in the nation in the 100m dash. The senior clocked in a time of 11.41 in the 100m at the 2012 Clyde LittleField Texas Relays. Abinuwa will also be taking the track in the women’s 200m on Saturday at 8:40 p.m.

Sophomore Janice Jackson clocked in the second-fastest time in school history in the women’s 100m hurdles. Jackson registered a time of 13.48 at the UTEP Invitational, breaking a school record that stood still since 1988. The sophomore is ranked 43rd in the nation in the 100m hurdles.

Senior Kathya Garcia returns to the track after suffering an injury that forced her to sit out the cross country and indoor season. Garcia is ranked 49th in the nation in the 10,000m with a season-best time of 34:19.26 recorded at the Stanford Invitational. The senior took silver and bronze at the 2011 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000m and 5,000m, respectively.

Both squads will be competing in the 4x400m relay on Sunday scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.
