Miners Ready to Compete at the New Mexico Classic

The Miners return to action at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday and Saturday at the Convention Center.

Kicking of the competition on Friday at 3 p.m. (MT) is Monica Lopez, Bria Love and Nickevea Wilson in the long jump. Wilson opened the season with a mark of 5.65m (18-06.50) finishing eighth overall at the Cherry and Silver Invitational.

School record holder, Janice Jackson, leads the women’s team at this weekend’s competition. The junior is ranked 19th in the nation in the 60m hurdles with an altitude time of 8.35 posted at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational. Last season the transfer registered the fastest time in program history in the 60m hurdles (8.28) at the Alex Wilson Invitational.

Representing the Miners in the 60m dash on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. will be Brianna McGhee, Magen Del Pino and Yolanda Suggs. Suggs opened the season in Albuquerque clocking in an indoor personal-best time of 24.61 in the 200m.

On the field, Taylor Gunn and Lidia Hernandez will represent UTEP in the shot put at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Gunn recorded a throw of 12.60m (41-04.25) taking 11th place overall at the season opener.

On the men’s team, Demetris Elia will take the field at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the weight throw. The sophomore is ranked fourth in Conference USA with a toss of 18.31m (60-01.00).

Freshman Carnell Horn will run in the men’s 400m on Friday at 5:20 p.m. The newcomer is ranked second in the league in the event with a time of 48.64 posted at the UNM Cherry and Silver invitational.

Anthony Rotich will once again compete in the 3,000m and the mile for the Miners. The All-American sits at No. 3 in the nation in the 3,000m with a time of 7:59.40 posted at UTEP’s season opener. The distance runner is also ranked 21st in the nation in the mile with a time of 4:03.07.
