Miners Ready to Compete at NCAA Championships
All-Region selections Risper Kimaiyo and Anthony Rotich will be representing UTEP at the 2012 NCAA Championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday.
Kimaiyo will be taking the course at 10 a.m. (MST) in the women’s 6K race while Rotich will be running at 11:15 a.m.
Kimaiyo is known to be a force on the course year after year, but this season the senior has earn multiple honors and has posted personal best times. This will be the fourth time that the All-American will be competing at the NCAA Championships. Kimaiyo finished in 25th place at last year’s NCAA Championships registering a time of 20:12.
The Kenyan native became the first woman in program history to claim three straight crowns at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships clocking in a time of 20:10.8 winning the race by more then seven seconds. The distance runner also earned her third Conference USA title with a time of 16:42.8 in the 5K run. Kimaiyo has been named Mountain Region Athlete of the Year, C-USA Outstanding Senior of the Meet, and C-USA All-Academic this season.
Rotich has been unstoppable as he took the course for the first time in the Orange and Blue. The freshman has posted four first place finishes out of six meets this season. Most recently, Rotich took second place at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships crossing the finish line with a time of 29:55.9 in the men’s 10K claiming second place.
The Kenyan native didn’t stop there as he recorded a first place finish at the 2012 C-USA Championship recording a time of 23:32.2 in the 8K race. The freshman has proven to be a tough competitor as he clocked in a personal-best of 23:01 in the 8K defeating 271 runners at the NCAA Pre-National meet.
