The UTEP track and field team will open the 2013 indoor season at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, NM on Friday.

The men’s team is led by letterwinners Anthony Rotich, Anthony Wright and Abiola Onakoya.
Rotich enters his second season in the Orange and Blue and has proven to be a threat on the track. The sophomore registered a season-best time of 14:02.16 in his season meet of his career in the 5,000m at the 2012 UW Husky Classic. He then posted a silver finish at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships in the 5,000m. The distance runner is a two time All-American in the 3,000m steeplechase and cross country. Rotich will be competing in the mile and 3,000m starting on Friday starting at 5:40 (MT).

Wright sprinted out of the blocks and never looked back during his 2012 season. The senior claimed gold at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the 60m with a personal best of 6.74. He carried the momentum to the outdoor season and earned another gold medal in the 100m along with three silver in the 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. Wright went on to represent the Miners at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships where he posted a personal best of 10.38 in the 100m. The conference champion will be running in the 200m on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and 4x400m relay on Saturday 6:10 p.m.

Onakoya was a member of the 4x400m relay squad that took gold at the C-USA Indoor Championships posting a meet record of 3:11.64. The sophomore was ranked 29th in the nation in the 400m with a mark of 46.08. He represented the Miners at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in the 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m relay. Onakoya will be one of five Miners (Manuel Lopez, Tommy McCoy, A-Shawni Mitchell and Daniel Tarango) that will be competing in the 600m on Friday at 6 p.m.

The field events for the men will begin on Friday starting at 4 p.m. Andrew Castillo, Andres Estrada, Donovant Grant and Brandon Jones will be representing UTEP in the long jump at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

On the women’s side, Janice Jackson had a stellar 2012 campaign, which involved consistently breaking records. The junior registered the fastest time in school history in the 60m hurdles with a personal best of 8.28 posted at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The sprinter carried her success to the outdoor season recording the 25th-fastest time in the nation in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.27 secured at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. Jackson concluded the season with an appearance at the NCAA Championships. She will be taking the track on Saturday in the 60m hurdle prelims along with Aeisha McDavid, Brianna McGhee and Samantha Sharper at 11:20 a.m. In the evening Jackson will take the track again in the 4x400m relay.

El Paso native Paris Ware will be making her debut in the Orange and Blue on Friday in the 600m set to begin at 6:20 p.m. The freshman will also compete in the 200m and 4x400m relay this weekend.
