Miners Head to Texas Tech Red Raider Open
A group of Miners will be representing the UTEP track and field team at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
Kicking off the meet will be Laura Macauley with the women’s javelin throw scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (CT). This is the first time the Macauley will be taking the field after suffering an injury at the beginning of the season. The senior is ranked 25th in the nation with a mark of 48.77m posted at the UTEP Springtime meet.
Also representing the Miners on the field will be newcomers Krystal Fleming and Taylor Gunn. Fleming recorded a season-best at the UTEP Invitational in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.99m. Gunn will also be participating in the women’s discus throw.
All-American Endurance Abinuwa will be returning to the track after suffering a minor injury last week. The senior will be competing in the 400m dash for the first time this outdoor season. Abinuwa was the only Miner to participate in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, where she ran the 400m and clocked in a time of 54.50.
Magen Del Pino and Yolanda Suggs will be concluding the meet with the 200m dash. The duo participated in the 4x100m relay and 4x200m relay last weekend at Drake Relays. The 4x200m relay squad took fourth at Drake Relays with a time of 1:37.41 defeating some of the nations top runners.
On the men’s side, Elkana Rotich will be competing in the 1,500m on Saturday. The sophomore clocked in a time of 3:50.71 in the Miners outdoor season opener. Rotich is ranked seventh in the Conference USA performance list.
Donovant Grant will be taking the field in the men’s high jump and triple jump schedule to begin at 5 p.m. Grant claimed a bronze medal at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championships in the triple jump. The junior is currently ranked sixth in the league in both events.
El Paso native, Matt Dudley will be participating in the men’s discus throw and shot put. The senior is ranked sixth in C-USA in the discus with a mark of 51.38m recorded at the Don Kirby Invitational.
This will be the last time the UTEP track and field team will compete before heading to the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 11-13 in New Orleans, La.
