Miners Have Three Players All Conference
UTEP soccer standouts Tess Hall (first), Tori Martyn (first) and Azia Nicholson (second) have earned placement on the 2012 Conference USA Women’s Soccer All-Academic Teams. It marks the second straight year that the trio has been so honored. Additionally, all three secured a spot on the all-conference squad earlier this week for their achievements on the pitch.
“I am extremely happy for Tess, Azia and Tori,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “They excel on the soccer field, but most importantly are successful in the classroom too. This distinction tells a lot about their character. This is an exceptional honor for our program, and I am very happy for the three of them.”
Hall boasts a 3.86 cumulative GPA in kinesiology. She has been a three-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal, which mandates a minimum 3.75 GPA. Hall had a banner season on the pitch, leading the squad in goals (eight), assists (nine) and points (25). The outgoing senior concluded her career as one of just three players in program history with at least 20 goals and 20 assists. She departs second all time in career assists (27) and fifth in points (69).
Martyn has been perfect in the classroom with a 4.0 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in kinesiology. She has earned two C-USA academic medals in as many years. Martyn had a great season from an athletic standpoint as well. She scored three times, with two headers to help stop Memphis’ 30-match C-USA unbeaten streak, and also contributed four assists.
Nicholson has a 3.70 cumulative GPA in biology, and she has also received a pair of C-USA Academic medals. She enjoyed a quality campaign on the pitch as a junior in 2012. Nicholson was second on the team in goals (six) and points (15). She was also used on defense when needed, marking the top players in the league.
