Miners Finish in Top Five at NCAA Championships

UTEP’s Anthony Rotich and Risper Kimaiyo finished in top five at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

“I am proud on the way both Risper (Kimaiyo) and Anthony (Rotich) represented our program and institution at the national championships today,” said head coach Paul Ereng. “The UTEP bright Orange and Blue singlet shined very bright out there in the front. I am very proud to be a coach of such a pair.”

Rotich was a threat on the course as he was the first freshman to cross the finish line with a time of 29:13.5 in the 10K race. The All-American took fourth place at the NCAA meet and finished ahead of 241 runners. The last time a Miner on the men’s side finished in the top four was in 1983, when Zak Barie claimed the crown.

“For Anthony, he has set a very high bar for himself,” said Ereng. “That means we will be working hard every year to come close or surpass that goal.”

Kimaiyo concludes a stellar cross country career with the Miners as she registers a new personal-best of 19:41.0 in the 6K. The senior became the first woman in program history to receive four cross country All-American honors. She ended the season with six top three performances and multiple post-season honors in the Orange and Blue.

“Risper concludes her cross country eligibility after collecting four All-American honors,” said Ereng.
