The New Mexico Bowl featuring old WAC rivals BYU and UTEP kicks off the 2010 bowl season and for the Miners, who have not reached a bowl since 2005, it means playing in the first bowl game of their careers.
Head Coach Mike Price believes the sooner the better because with only fifteen alloted post-season practices, a longer layoff can mean distractions.
"I think this is a good bowl game to go to for that purpose of getting the kids that have never been before, because there is not as long to travel and there is not a lot of wasted time," said Price.
The players have taken advantage of the extended season.
"We are taking it full speed. We are not really slowing down at all," said Senior Linebacker Jeremy Springer. "We are taking it one day at a time. We are working really hard."
For the 26 seniors on the team, it is a chance to finish their careers on a high note after four years of frustration.
Kickoff for the New Mexico bowl is set for noon on New Years Eve at University Stadium in Albuquerque.
