Miners Drop Doubleheader
The Miners fell to 13-30, 2-15 C-USA on the season after falling to Memphis in a double header in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday. The Miners mustered only one run in the two games falling 5-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
A two-run first inning off of Colleen Hohman helped the Tigers to an early lead over the Miners. The tigers scored the runs without a hit scoring the first on a RBI groundout to second and bringing the second run to the plate on a sac-fly to left field.
UTEP got one of the runs back in the next frame when Kayla Black, who reached on a walk and advanced on a sac-bunt by Kayleigh Walts, scored on a throwing error by the Tigers third baseman.
The Tigers held onto their one run lead through the next three frames as both teams remained scoreless in those innings. After a scoreless sixth for the Miners the Tigers broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the third to secure their victory.
Hohman pitched her second complete game in as many starts coming up short in this effort throwing six innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits and only two walks. Hohman struck out six Tigers in the affair.
Ellen Roberts pitched a complete game on the winning side giving up no earned runs and scattering four hits.
Memphis took advantage of an early lead in game two when they scored their first run in the third inning with Cynthia Villastrigo in the circle. An error by Laura Ramos at third allowed Palmieri to reach second base. She advanced on a sac-bunt and scored when Curtis drove a single to shortstop.
Cynthia Villastrigo turned out one of her best performances in a Miner uniform pitching a complete game allowing only two earned runs on five hits and just one walk.
Richwood and Roberts combined for the shutout of the Miners striking out a combined seven. Richwood allowed all four Miner hits in her four innings of work.
Memphis scored two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning. Curtis drove in three of the four runs for the Tigers.
The Miners will look to leave Memphis with a win in game three of the series on Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex.
