Miners Dominate Relays at African Championships
Endurance Abinuwa and Abiola Onakoya led Nigeria to gold finishes at the 18th African Senior Athletics Championships in Port Novo, Benin Republic on Sunday.
Abinuwa ran the first leg for Nigeria in the women’s 4x400m relay (Abinuwa, Omolara Omotosho, Margaret Etim and Bukola Dammy Abogumloko). The All-American led the squad to a first place finish with a time of 3:28.77.
Onakoya was a member of the 4x400m relay team (Saul Weigopwa, Amaechi Morton, Onakoya Isah Salihou) that earned gold at the African Championships. The squad clocked in a time of 3:02.39 and defeated South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Niger, Benin and Ethiopia.
21st European Athletics Championships
Former Miner Churandy Martina took two gold medals at the 21st European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Martina represented the Netherlands in the men’s 200m dash and was the top finisher with a time of 20.42. Teammate Patrick Van Luijk took second with a time of 20.87, followed by Daniel Talbot from Great Britain with a time of 20.95.
Martina didn’t stop there earning the Netherlands another first place finish in the 4x100m relay. Brian Mariano, Martina, Giovanni Codrington and Patrick Van Luijk posted a time of 38.34.
