Miners Cross Country Set to Compete at C-USA Championships
The UTEP cross country team will be traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the 2012 Conference USA Championships on Monday.
Anthony Rotich leads the men’s team having already claimed three crowns this season for the Miners. The freshman clocked in a personal-best of 23:01 in the 8K at the 2012 NCAA Pre-National competition. Rotich was earned three C-USA Athlete of the Week honors during his 2012 campaign. He continues to impress having only lost one race this cross country season as he crossed the finish line second at the Cowboy Jamboree with a time of 24:29.26.
Fellow teammate Elphas Maiyo has also proven to be a threat this year on the course. The freshman registered a personal-best of 23:54.2 at the Pre-National meet. He also crossed the finish line second at the 2012 Lori Fitzgerald meet helping the Miners claim the meet title.
Elkana Rotich is the only senior on the UTEP squad this season and has always been a force for the Miners. The Kenyan native claimed the conference title in 2010 and was runner-up in last year’s competition. Rotich posted a season best time of 24:16.1 in the men’s 8K race at the Pre-Nationals meet. The senior took third place at the Lori Fitzgerald home meet clocking in a time of 15:26.48.
The women’s team is led by senior RIsper Kimaiyo, who finished second at last year’s C-USA championships with a time of 16:14.7. The three-time All-American has finished on top in two meets this season and was named C-USA Athlete of the Week three times this season. Kimaiyo most recently, registered a personal-best of 19:46 in the 6K at the 2012 NCAA Pre-Nationals race.
Senior Karina Garcia will also be running in her last conference championships. The Mexican native recorded a time of 21:40.9 at the Pre-National event and was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line at the Lori Fitzgerald meet.
